CHAPTER 3 - I Search for Somebody I'm Not

Newt racks his brains during class that morning to find his inner other, his personal hero, but fails. School closes early that day to allow the students to watch the Big Game Pep Parade. Only JJ and Cecil have decided on their secret superhero. Newt has a bad dream and wakes up to hear his parents loading their SUV's with supplies for the pregame barbecue.

CHAPTER 2 - Halloween Plans Are Made-Sort Of

As usual, puny Newt is ignored as he greets classmates in the playground. He sits at the far end of the schoolyard and begins to sketch in his Secret Superhero Sketchbook. Newt recalls how big brother Chris used to sit him on his lap and read to him from his vast collection of comic books. Too young to understand the tales, Newt was hypnotised by the images of the superheroes with their amazing powers. He began tracing the characters in the comics. Soon young Newt was inventing his own superheroes, such as Master-Key and Paper-Boy. He keeps his sketches a secret from everyone except for his best friends ; Juanita Josephina Gonzalez (JJ) the walking dictionary and Cecil Butterworth the aspiring drummer. Both of them are also ignored at school. Cecil reminds his friends that Halloween is on Sunday, but JJ and Newt show little interest. CHAPTER 1 - Nobody Eats Breakfast

It is the last Friday in October. Ten-year-old Newt is preparing breakfast while elder brother Chris sleeps. Mom and Dad are busy answering early morning phone calls. The Appleton Sentinel headline screams 'Tonight's Big Game is the Biggest Yet !' The Sport Section features Chris, the star quarterback on his Fillmore High School's football team. Irritated that breakfast is getting cold, Newt unleashes his frustrations on Chris by storming upstairs (against his parents' orders) to shout at Chris, 'Hit the showers !' Only the second bellow moves Chris out of bed. He chases Newt to the backyard where Newt turns the garden hose on him. Chris surrender, shrieking 'I am up ! I am up !'

Chapter Summaries

Prologue Newton Newman, who is normally afraid of heights (acrophobic), is calmly falling from a dizzying height. His foot had broken through a rotted rung of a rickety wooden ladder that 'runs up the side of Appleton's last remaining water tower' in the city. In those split seconds he notices the marvellous blue sky, and a multitude of questions course through his mind. He recalls that it all began on the morning of the Big Game.

The Whole-Story Synopsis

Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford follows the adventures of Newton Newman, a small, scrawny ten-year old fourth grader, who is unnoticed at home and in school. He has to live in the shadow of elder brother Chris, the star quarterback on his Fillmore High School's football team. When Chris is knocked into a coma during the biggest football game of the season, Newt is lost in the whirlwind of concern about his sibling. Since his parents attention is focussed on Chris, Newt's two best friends, JJ and Cecil, decide that going trick-or-treating at Halloween is just what Newt needs to feel better. Newt comes up with Captain Nobody - defender of the little guy, champion of the downtrodden. His new alter ego brings newt through some amazing adventures. The last adventure lands him in the hospital with a broken leg and rib. He is put in the same room with his brother. While recalling the morning before Chris's accident, he unconsciously shouts 'HIT THE SHOWERS!' ...
